Everybody started cheering but I didn't know why. I didn't know what was going on until I looked at the scoreboard and saw the message. I saw Roberto when I was trying to get into the big leagues. I was impressed that he gave 100 percent in winter ball, just as he did in Pittsburgh. Some people used to say he was a crybaby – that he wouldn't play if he had an injury. But I saw him play hurt and he was better then than most players when they're healthy. He was all business on the playing field.
I was pretty quick then. I was on second base and tried to score on a hit up the right center alley. Roberto scooped up the ball and got it to the plate so fast I didn't have a chance.
