Being a big black man in America, I literally do not know how to conduct myself in a physical space. I don't know how to meet people without it seeming intimidating. I don't know if I should wear glasses, if I should try to look extra gay, if I should stand up, sit down, wave my ID, not reach for an ID. I don't know. I am literally immobilized in the presence of a lot of police power. That is a reality that could cross any form of social class, because it's racist. And it's very Caribbean of me to think my class can exclude me from racism. It's very Caribbean of me to think that if I just dress nicer, if I just wear a suit... It has nothing to do with that, it's racism...

Most actors possess an intuitive side. Actually, the further away I am from the character, the less work I have to do. It takes so much more energy to detach yourself from your own life references that might cross wires with your character's. I think it's cheating for me to ever use my life references in conjunction with my characters. It's my reaction transferred to the character, which isn't good. What I have to do is erase those things and then find something else. I can't stand in front of a camera and let anything of myself come through or I'm betraying the character's complete trueness. There are some actors who just use themselves. They can wear their ego on their sleeve and it looks great. I can't do that.

There is this freedom movement and then there is an attempt to narrow the freedom movement so that it fits into a much smaller frame, the frame of civil rights. Not that civil rights is not immensely important, but freedom is more expansive that civil rights.
