We live in a capitalist economy, and I have no particular objection to honorable self-interest. We cannot hope to make the needed, drastic improvement in primary and secondary education without a dramatic restructuring of salaries. In my opinion, you cannot pay a good teacher enough money to recompense the value of talent applied to the education of young children. I teach an hour or two a day to tolerably well-behaved near-adults-and I come home exhausted. By what possible argument are my services worth more in salary than those of a secondary-school teacher with six classes a day, little prestige, less support, massive problems of discipline, and a fundamental role in shaping minds.

I think the best thing the Federal Gov. can do when it comes to education K-12 is to abolish the Federal Department of Education. The Federal Department of Education gives each state about 11 cents out of every school dollar that every state spends but it comes with about 16 cents worth of strings attached. So what I think the country ... people do not understand is it's a negative to take federal money... So just get the fed. govt. out of education completely. Leave education to the states. Fifty laboratories of innovation and best practice and in my opinion we would have some fabulous innovation that would get emulated because we are all so competitive.

And I would contend that the basis of that framework is not Scotland's relationship with the other nations of the UK - strong and enduring though that will be. I think even if they were paid an hourly wage, it'd be quite an improvement from what they get. And you know, I understand the arguments about they're getting their education paid for, they're this that and the other, but there are people on academic scholarships that don't have to deal with any extra rigors. They get their education paid for. And they don't have to deal with eight hours a day of football, and you know, if you mess up your knee you've got to deal with two hours of rehab everyday. So that's 10 hours of your day gone, and there's only 24 in a day. So, if they just gave him an hourly wage, even if they gave him 10 bucks, 12 bucks an hour, that'd be a vast improvement over what they got now.
