It's only people that aren't goths that think the Cure are a goth band.
Robert Smith (musician)
I had no desire to be famous; I just wanted to make the greatest music ever made. I didn't want anyone to know who I was.
Robert Smith (musician)
I think, at heart, unless you discover faith in something else, something other, it's very hard to shake the thing that you're adrift alone.
Robert Smith (musician)
I look thuggish when I shave my head and wear big boots. I walk into a newsagent and people think I'm going to jump the counter.
Robert Smith (musician)
Hendrix was the first person I had come across who seemed completely free, and when you're nine or 10, your life is entirely dominated by adults. So he represented this thing that I wanted to be. Hendrix was the first person who made me think it might be good to be a singer and a guitarist - before that I wanted to be a footballer.
Robert Smith (musician)
It's really nice meeting people after a concert. Still, it's very weird to be at the center of a group of 30 people all listening to what you're saying. When that group turns into 300 people, it goes on from weird. Some people revel in it, and I don't.
Robert Smith (musician)
Perhaps not as badly applied and not as obvious, but for thousands of years, people have worn makeup on stage.
Robert Smith (musician)
Living, it's awful for me.

I'd like to record somewhere really different. Rent a really big house and get a mobile in and set up in the dining room. Maybe New England; it'd be nice in September or October.

Every animal would rather die themselves than lose their offspring. But it's just genes, isn't it? All of our existence is spent worrying about the next generation, but we don't actually seem to get anywhere.
Robert Smith (musician)
Apart from the fact that I've got a strange job, I do lead a fairly normal life. I do my own shopping. I don't feel constrained by who I am because of what I do; I often feel disappointed by my lack of ability. I get frustrated at myself, but I think everyone does.
Robert Smith (musician)
I am very self-conscious a lot of the time.
Robert Smith (musician)
I never answer if someone knocks on my door and only the band and my manager have my phone number. In any case my phone doesn't ring so I never notice it. I occasionally just walk past and pick it up to see if anyone's there.

A couple of years ago, we went to Eurodisney. That too was bearable, although it was a bit weird when Mickey Mouse came to ask for an autograph.
Robert Smith (musician)
I have a bag full of words, and when one of us comes up with a good piece of music, I look in the bag to see if anything there will fit. If nothing does, I sit down and try to put down on paper what the music makes me feel; very rarely will a piece of writing inspire a piece of music.
Robert Smith (musician)
I think we're in the Top 10 most bootlegged bands in history according to a web-poll. Pretty much every show we ever do is bootlegged, but it's very rare that one is of good enough quality to be listened to by anything other than the most fanatical people though I suppose only fanatical people buy bootlegs.
Robert Smith (musician)
I wake up and look at myself and think, 'yuck!
Robert Smith (musician)
I've experienced such extremes both in the band and in my personal life, feelings that last for just a few seconds at a time, that it's like a drug. After a while, when they're not there you notice the absence of it and nothing seems real anymore and nothings quite sharp enough or focused enough.
Robert Smith (musician)
Most of the time I'm a professional idiot. I really don't care about what other people think, which can be a bad thing.
Robert Smith (musician)
There is a reason for me always shoe-gazing. I simply can't look into the eyes of several thousand people. (Toronto Sun newspaper)
Robert Smith (musician)
If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I'm going to eat meat; that's how much I hate Morrissey.

It's really weird but my parents used to tell me I could do anything I wanted to. I used to say, 'Well, what if I want to be an astronaut and go to the moon?" and my dad used to say, 'If you really want to you can'. I used to think he was talking absolute rubbish, particularly when I was 21 and he was still saying that. But in a way it really stuck with me cos my dad ended up doing exactly what he wanted to do. To an outside point of view he's totally conformed, he's had a family and four kids but he's only ever done things that made him genuinely happy. "He jacked in his job cos it made him unhappy and he didn't want to compromise his entire life just for the sake of carrying it through. It's very admirable, that quality, and I think it's very rare in people. Most people feel so conditioned, so oppressed by everything that goes on around them that they just give in. You have to refuse to give in.
